It may come as a surprise but
many elderly people are unaware of their fading vision or think
it is normal to fade with age.
In very many cases new spectacles and professional
advice will help them improve their sight to a level that will
allow them to continue performing the everyday tasks that they
need to do, and the hobbies and pastimes that they want to follow.
A regular eye examination will detect the presence
of many eye problems from the need for spectacles to the requirement
for referral for treatment.
It is not uncommon for an
Optometrist to discover and refer previously undetected cataract or glaucoma,
which can be treated relatively easily, and which would have resulted
in blindness if left untreated.

People with another common condition, age related
macular degeneration,
which for the majority of cases is untreatable, can be advised
how to make the most of the vision they do have, how to preserve
the vision they do have and about visual aids that are available
to them.
Everyone over the age
of 60 should be encouraged to have their eyes examined every
2 years and for those over 70 every year, this is available under
the NHS.
If they are unable to leave home unaccompanied, they
are entitled to an NHS
sight test in their own home.
